Henry Murray

Henry Murray`s Psychogenic Needs!

Henry Murray`s approach to personality represents a mix of psychoanalytic and trait concepts.  Murray called his approach personology and identified the needs as the basic elements of personality.  Murray focused his work on psychogenic needs.  These needs described as "readiness to respond in a certain way under certain given conditions".  Murray wrote out 27 psychogenic needs.  The psychogenic needs function mostly on the unconscious level, but does play a major role in an individual`s personality.  Murray believed that the needs canoe interrelated, can support other needs, and can also conflict with other needs ( Burger 155-157).

I believe I can relate to Henry Murray`s psychogenic needs.  I can first relate to the psychogenic need achievement.  I am an individual who tries to overcome as many obstacles as I can.  As I am getting older I want to try to achieve as many things that I can.  I always strive to something accomplish something difficult that I am working on.  I also try to do it as quickly as possible.
I can also relate to play.  I like to relax myself and try to seek entertainment.  I always like to go out with friends and family to have a good time, whether its going to the movies and dinner.  I enjoy laughing, and joking around.  I am the type of person who tries to inhale the positive things in life, and tries to avoid any serious tension.  the last psychogenic need that I can relate to is order.  When in order you like to arrange, organize, and put away things.  I try to be a neat and tidy person as much as possible.  You will me always cleaning things up and organizing things.  I work at a daycare so I am always picking up after the children.  At home I am always tidying up as well.  I try to help my parents out with cleaning.  I believe I can relate to many of Henry Murray`s psychogenic needs.

Cattell

The Big Five Personality!

The Trait Approach is a different way to approach individuals personality.  Traits is a dimension of personality used to categorize people according to the degree to which they manifest a certain characteristic (Burger 150).   Raymond Cattell was a personality theorist that devoted his studies on discovering how many personality traits there are.  Cattell came up with the Trait Approach The Big Five (Burger 159).  The Big Five are five basic dimensions of personality.  The five traits are Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness.

The traits that fit me the most is Extraversion and Conscientiousness.  The trait Extraversion fits me best when I show my outgoing and fun personality.  Conscientiousness fit me best when I am at work, in the zone, with my serious personality in play.  With the trait Extraversion, I would consider myself high in.  I am a sociable person who is energetic and friendly.  I enjoy spending time with friends and family and spending time in social situations.  I am also a fun-loving person.
I find myself in the Conscientiousness trait when I am at work.  I am very well organized at school but also at school as well.  I also am well plan oriented and determined when trying to get a task done either at school or at school.  I find myself trying to be as achieving as I can.  I believe that Extraversion and Conscientiousness would describe me most in The Big Five.
